The members of the United Nations Security Council voted today to call a special session of the Security Council to discuss peace and security of the Persian Gulf. Increased tensions between the United States Navy and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Straits of Hormuz have prompted the decision to meet.The Security Council hopes to pass a resolution ensuring that the Straits of Hormuz remains peaeful and secure to continue oil deliveries around the world. Iran has been invited to participate in the meeting as an Observer, though as they do not currently sit on the Security Council they will only be able to offer advice and participate in the debate. They will not have a vote on the final resolution.
It is also thought that the Security Council could deal with the soon-to-expire UN mandate in Iraq while they are discussing related issues.
